Built on Boulders, This California Cabin Is Solid as a Rock

It took a wise man to build this house on a rock. The three-bedroom cabin on 5 acres in Idyllwild, CA, is now available for $1,950,000.

Architect Dennis McGuire built the home in the middle of a forest in 1981. To preserve the natural habitat, he incorporated massive granite boulders into the design. The current owners have enjoyed this forest retreat for nearly two decades.

At 2,117 square feet, it's larger than it seems at first glance. Inside, the same holds true. The savvy use of space, high ceilings, and an abundance of windows makes the home seem much bigger.

A remarkable wooden chandelier hangs in the dining area, and the space is warmed by a large brick fireplace.

The cabin definitely offers up Craftsman vibes. Stylish built-in furniture can be found inside and out, and a deck with built-in benches appears to float in the canyon space.

The main living space features a boulder outcropping, and the wine cellar is flanked by another boulder. After a glass of wine, a new owner can retreat to the sauna or hot tub.

The property comes with a small guest cottage with a prominent deck.

However, nothing beats the clever tram that was used to bring building materials to the house. It's still in working condition today.

The "tram haus" is conveniently attached to the garage. Residents and guests can take a load off and ride the tram up to the house. Alternatively, they could walk up from the carport or even drive right to the top—but where's the fun in that?

Idyllwild is nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains, which tower over the Palm Springs area. It has become a popular destination during the COVID-19 pandemic with creative minds who are looking for peace, solitude, and decent prices up in the hills.
