Plymouth couple John Lee and Aneta Alczak have opened Maika'i City Spa

A brand new business in the centre of Plymouth that is guaranteed to bring customers relaxation. Plymouth couple John Lee and Aneta Alczak have opened Maika'i City Spa on May 2 which offers professional beauty and wellbeing treatments - as well as a hot-tub and sauna.

John and Aneta both have years of experience in the beauty and wellbeing industry and have been working hard to open their Hawaiian themed spa. From sports massages to facial reconstructions, MaiKa'i offer it all - including group packages for a spa session.

John said before starting up Maika'i City Spa, situated on Princess Street, he worked in the military within the parachute regiment and when he finished, the military funded a two year, level four sports course where he learned massage techniques. Antea 's background is a cosmetologist, which she studied at a Polish university, and has been working in the health and wellbeing industry for over 20 years. Her primary job is natural skin specialist and has a collection of prestigious certificates displayed.

So when John and Aneta met fourteen months ago, he wanted to rekindle his skill to open up the business together. Inside Maika'i you are welcomed by a soothing atmosphere with a reception area, a spa area and different rooms for various procedures whether that's for a massage or fillers.

The name of the spa, Maika'i means 'beautiful' and 'handsome' in Hawaiian, which fits perfectly with the natural aesthetics. Not only does the spa offer individual treatments, but they also cater for groups who want a spa day together which includes the massage room, sauna, hot tub and Tikki bar.

John told PlymouthLive: "We are a city spa, we primarily do everything in the wellbeing and beauty industry. We have a cosmetic shop sponsored by Thalgo, which is a world recognised spa beauty creams and cosmetics.

"We do a range of treatments from holistic massage rituals to skin rituals like face masks, acid peels and bio-stimulation. We then do the more aesthetic approach with the Botox, fillers, facial reconstructions, adding jaw bones, changing noses and things like that. Some people aren't happy with the way they look so we like to help out and see what we can do in that area.

"Maikai also offers a range of spa treatments from sports massage therapy all the way up to a hot stone massage. We also do body masks. We're not a beauty place, we are very clinical with all the injections that we do and we concentrate more on the wellbeing side with the holistic aspects. The list is endless of what we offer."

He added: "If you have a massage we always recommend to have a fifteen minute sauna beforehand to warm the muscles up, a consultation, a body massage then relax in the hot tub."

On top of this, MaiKai cater for groups of people for a beauty party in the spa area. There is a Tikki bar, a hot-tub, a sauna and a massage room where people can let their hair down and simply relax. Maika'i is offering something different to the city centre and it's already proving to be popular with customers.

He said: "Basically a group of people could come here, slip on a gown and some slippers, have some complimentary champagne and all get different parts done while relaxing in the hot-tub or sauna- make kind of a soiree of it- or come on by yourself and do the same thing." He added: "We hope to be a thriving and a busy place.”

Talking about what his favourite part of the business is, John said: "I love the aesthetics. The name MaiKai is Hawaiian, and it embodies the words beautiful, handsome, beautiful inside, wellbeing, good fortune and good health. We all want to look beautiful, but we all want to feel beautiful as well because it goes hand in hand. So we tried to be more natural by using the wooden details and including a Hawaiian theme."
