Millar’s Cottage, Tandy’s Bridge, Naas, Co Kildare, €900k

A s Oldtown Mill in Naas first began turning its water wheels to produce wholemeal nourishment for the masses in the 18th century, a quaint cottage was built nearby for the chief miller, or millar as he was likely then known.

The property stood in the grounds of the de Burgh demesne, a leafy estate that had been in the same family from the arrival of Colonel Thomas de Burgh, Surveyor General of Ireland in the early 18th century and a forefather of singer Chris de Burgh and his daughter Rosanna Davison. At the end of the century, it went through the mill of history when it was used as a look-out post for crown forces garrisoned at Oldtown during the 1798 Rebellion.

In the early 20th century, Millar’s Cottage became home to renowned Kildare footballer Jack Higgins and his wife Molly, who renovated and extended the property and raised their family there. More recently, it underwent another transformation in 2005 with an architect-designed extension that preserved the curved shaped of the original building and reflected that in the new addition to the home.
