The state of the art facility contains Derby's first ever 50m pool, a high-tech gym, a dance studio, and soft-play area.

After years of planning and tens of millions of pounds of investment, Moorways Sports Village was officially opened on Saturday (May 21) by the Mayor of Derby, Robin Wood.

He was joined by political figures and VIPs, such as BBC presenter and swimming champion Mark Foster and fellow Olympic swimmer, Derbyshire's own Ross Davenport.

Also there were Derby County Women's player of the season, Sarah Jackson, and manager, Sam Griffiths.

The grand opening occurred at 9.15am when the ribbon was cut to declare Moorways Sports Village open. Many eager visitors watched on before heading in for their first taste of the new facilities on offer.

As well as Derby's first ever 50m pool, inside the complex are water slides, a wave machine, flumes, a high-tech gym, showers a sauna, steam rooms, a dance studio, spin studio and soft-play area for little ones.

There were events throughout the morning to mark the opening of Moorways Sports Village. Former Team GB athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton was in the gym, heptathlon Commonwealth medalist Niamh Emerson was out on the track at Moorways Stadium and football freestyler Jamie Knight showed off his box of tricks.

Later, Mark Foster, Ross Davenport and Niamh Emerson tried to beat Perri Shakes-Drayton's gym challenges on what was a historic day for Derby.

Olympic champion swimmer, Mark Foster, was impressed by the "phenomenal facility", saying “without a shadow of a doubt" it could create the next Adam Peaty".

Derby County Women's player of the season, Sarah Jackson, and Sam Griffiths, team manager, said the village is great news for locals, especially women and girls, who want to get into sport.

Mum Zoe Reeve with sons Ronnie and Vinnie and partner Alan were excited to try out the pool and football academy at Moorways.

Swimmer Jennifer with mum Lisa and dad Stewart. She said she's excited for the 50m pool at Moorways after a sneak preview earlier in the week with Derby City Life Saving Swimming Group. She said: "I’m excited for the bigger pool because Queens was only 25 meters.”

Long-serving chief time keeper at Derby Athletics Club, Ernie Cripps, 66 said it is “very fortunate that we’ve got this facility" and is looking forward to the village holding international competitions.

Husband and wife Michelle and Michael Wheetley said they were excited for a swim to keep fit. They added that it is good to see the facility open after a 13 year wait.
